These were preliminary demos for Beneath the Forest of Error - different recordings, production, engineering.

I had tried (and failed) to record the album with another producer/engineer years before the 2012 album was recorded/released. We just couldn't get our schedules to align, and these recordings just got forgotten.

I am proud of the 2012 album - however, a few of the artistic choices made in these mixes are more true to what I had originally intended for Beneath the Forest of Error to sound. Listen to them here.

NOTES:

1) Forest of Error:
The vocal takes here were used in the 2012 recording of Beneath the Forest of Error. They are exactly the same. I used Ross's guitar setup to get some of these sounds - intending the sound of chaos. The most memorable one was the dirty "wah".

2) Reverse Side:
Another song that was intended to sound like chaos. Mission accomplished.

3) The Gift:
I took a more subtle approach to the Actraiser "Birth of the People" musical reference. I prefer this version to the one on the 2012 album. The gritty "sawtooth-y" synth after the interlude is perfect.

4) Break:
Break is a song I didn't include on Beneath the Forest of Error - I felt it didn't fit the overall theme of the album at the time. There is an acoustic version of this from my A Premonition EP, originally recorded in 2006. This version of Break is my absolute favorite.

5) August:
I wanted August to have a feeling of atmosphere. We did a decent job here with the guitars.

6) Slay the Dragon:
The vocal takes here were used in the 2012 recording of Beneath the Forest of Error - along with the ones from "Forest of Error". They are exactly the same. I had some different ideas for the types of beats happening in different sections, notably the interlude ("Greetings, my friend..."). Drums are very different from the 2012 recording.

7) [Unnamed]
I worked on-and-off with a producer and engineer named Brian Sanders. We had collaborated on this one - he created the beat and chord changes, I wrote some lyrics and a melody. The lyrics were compiled by gutting from some of my earliest, earliest songs and piecing them together (2002-2004-ish).

I never came up with a name for this one. [Unnamed] suits it well.

I have no idea how to credit the sample - I have no idea where it came from. Your guess is as good as mine.
